Position Overview

The Hurrell lab at UC Davis is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Junior Specialist to join our dynamic research team. This position is designed for recent graduates or early-career scientists interested in hands-on laboratory experience and scientific inquiry. The Junior Specialist will support ongoing research projects, collaborate with lab members, and contribute broadly to our academic mission. Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the purchase of lab equipment, consumables, and reagents according to the research needs and compliance standards.
  • Establish and enforce laboratory safety protocols, signage, and storage procedures.
  • Arrange and organize laboratory workstations, storage, and communal areas for efficient workflow.
  • Plan and coordinate initial ordering and arrival of mouse strains from approved vendors.
  • Set up and manage animal housing facilities, ensuring compliance with institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) and relevant regulations.
  • Oversee daily animal husbandry operations, including feeding, cage changing, and environmental enrichment.
  • Communicate with vendors, facilities, EH&S, and animal care personnel to resolve logistical issues.
  • Create and maintain documentation for all lab and animal facility protocols, compliance, and emergency plans.
  • Conduct experimental procedures and collect data in support of ongoing research projects.
  • Participate in group meetings and contribute to scientific discussions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, nutrition or a related field.
  • Prior laboratory coursework or research experience (undergraduate research is sufficient).
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Demonstrated interest in academic research or laboratory science.
